The Private House Built in the Style of "Honmune-dukuri"
"Honmune-dukuri" means the architectural style of a traditional private house in Japan.
The characteristic of a private house built in the style of Honmune-dukuri is that it has a gable roof (called Kiriduma) and doorways at the sides of th gable. Both ends of the roof have double gables (called Hafu), and on top of the front gable is set an ornamental board (called Suzume-odori), which adds more beauty and balance to the house. Seen from a distance, the appearance of the house is wonderful.
This Honmune-dukuri is one of the most dignified styles of private house in the Matsumoto District, and in some villages there still remain some private houses of this style which were built about two hundred years ago. We are very proud of such a wonderful architectural technique which our forefathers devised.
This hotel was built according to the style of a private house which stands magnificently in Gobara-no-shuku even now. (Gobara-no-shuku is the name of a relay station in the Edo era.)
The gently sloping roof, the beams, the trunk of a zelkovatree, the thick crossed-pillars, the broad frontage, the bow-windows, the projecting lattices.....all these are just like those a few hundred years ago.
Please enjoy the beauty of the true traditional technique of building private houses.
